SWEET

by Schatzie Schaefers

SWEET is a darkly comic play told through two parallel worlds: a seventeenth-century Hungarian castle ruled by a countess obsessed with eternal youth, and a modern-day trailer in Sweet Home, Oregon, where Jackie, a meth cook battling trauma and codependency, must confront her past when her estranged teenage half-sister arrives unexpectedly for Christmas. As the Countess prepares a grotesque holiday ritual in her dungeon, Jackie scrambles to hide the wreckage of her life. The timelines begin to blur, connected by dreams, memory, and a mounting sense of reckoning. With an all-female cast and a rich blend of twisted humor and sharp insight, Sweet explores cycles of abuse, the cost of survival, and the ghosts we carry through time and across generations.

About the Playwright

Schatzie Schaefers is an Alaska-based playwright whose work has been produced across the country, including in New York City, San Francisco, St. Paul, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Columbus, Camden N.J. and at Western Connecticut State University. In Alaska, her plays have been staged by Perseverance Theatre, Cyrano’s, Out North, Anchorage Community Theatre, the University of Alaska Anchorage, Prince William Sound College, West Anchorage High School, and the Valdez Theatre Conference. She is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild and the Blue Roses Collective in New York City, and recipient of the Connie Boochever Fellowship from the Alaska State Council on the Arts

Recent productions include her Enron scandal-inspired thriller Spikes at Cyrano’s Theatre, and her murder mystery Silver Thaw at Anchorage Community Theatre. Sweet, a dark comedy commissioned for a drama therapy initiative supporting women in addiction recovery after incarceration, was produced with support from Akeela House Recovery Center. Schatzie also wrote the TV pilot Cabin Nite for Affinity Films’ Alaska TV Pilot Project.

Schatzie brings a deep fascination with crime—its ripple effects, emotional fallout, and moral ambiguity—to much of her work, which often blends dark humor with themes of survival, complicity, and resilience.
