Early on, he focused on a medical career, earning a BA in biology from the University of St. Thomas. His interest in language also motivated him to further his study of Spanish grammar and literature. After earning his MD from the University of Texas Medical School-Houston, Dr. Garza spent over 30 years building a successful multi-clinic pediatric practice in northwest Houston. He has served as the chairman of Pediatrics at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center and on the Board of Governors at North Cypress Medical Center.

He has always had an interest in the theater, performing in productions in college and at his church. Over a decade ago, he and his wife Lisa became founding members of Houston Family Arts Center, eventually spearheading the construction of an award winning community theater where he commissioned, produced and acted in several productions.
