MY (VIRTUALLY) PERFECT ROOMMATE

by Nicky Lowney

Amanda is an upbeat professional from California preparing to start a new job in Boston. With the guidance of a well-meaning real estate agent (Shirley), she encounters hilarious surprises as she seeks the perfect roommate… virtually. The cast of potential roomies includes a pet enthusiast, a theater afficionado, a shady mobster, and a house full of rowdy gamers. Will Amanda ever find the perfect roommate? Will she learn how to pronounce the names of Massachusetts towns? Will Shirley ever master the mute button? About the Playwright

Nicky Lowney is Boston-area actor and freelance writer. She wrote her first play, MY (VIRTUALLY) PERFECT ROOMMATE in early 2021 when her local theater group was searching for a fun and engaging online show to produce. The story was inspired by Nicky’s own madcap apartment hunts in San Francisco and Boston.

The play was originally staged by ShirleyArts! in Shirley, MA in 2021. Virtual Theater Lab in Phoenix, AZ produced the second show (and first live performance) in 2022. Nicky later went on to win the Virtual Theater Lab Playwright Excellence Award for full-length comedy writing.

As an actress, Nicky has appeared in films and commercials in the Boston area. She’s active on stage, working as a regular cast member for a murder mystery improv show and as a storyteller for ghost story evenings and other live events.

Nicky is a proud member of both the Dramatists Guild of America and the American Medical Writers Association. She lives in Groton, MA, where she enjoys haranguing her long-suffering husband and embarrassing her three children.

Fun list of characters in this cast!

This was such a fun show to perform in. It was great to see the cast develop their unique style to the characters. You might even relate to some of the potential roomies! The story line ushers the audience to empathize with Amanda in her struggles to find that perfect roommate…This is a show to watch again and again.

So much fun for a cast of character actors!

I am the Artistic Director of Virtual Theater Lab, and we performed this on a live stream at the end of January 2022. This show is SO much fun. Each character is wackier than the next, which makes it an absolute blast for character actors to perform. I am thrilled that we were able to perform this show. I think it’s hilarious, and I love that the show is written to be done in a conference call format. I am certain this show would be fantastic on stage as well. I can definitely imagine creative ways for that to happen. Thank you, Nicky, for writing a show that really allows character actors to shine. We had a wonderful time with it, and folks who saw it gave us very kind reviews. If you have a theatre company with a diverse group of performers, definitely look into this show for one of your productions. Goodness knows we still need laughter in the world. If you have an opportunity to see this show performed, don’t miss out!

Fabulous play! Made me laugh, often. Quite a cast of characters. Seemed very possible in this strange world we live in. Looks like everyone had a fun time performing it too. Well done!

Lockdown Art

It had to happen that someone, somewhere, takes a step back from the Zoom era and turns our now modern screen interactions into creation. To my knowledge, Nicky was the first to go as far in this quest. In real life and in a play, the screen frame poses many limits. What shines through the frame then are the insightful, sometimes funny thoughts, and very well written dialogues.

Hilarious Play!

First off, hilarious! Full of great Boston jokes, and wonky characters to laugh with (and at)!
As a viewer, this feel-good comedy is pitch perfect to enjoy.
As an actor, the characters are a joy to really play around with.
As a director, the overall piece is hilarious and what’s better than working on something that brings everyone so much laughter?
As a producer, you can’t beat the flexibility. Wanna put it on Stage? No problem. Wanna make it into a Film? No problem. Wanna make a Live Event and perform it Online for an audience? No problem. Think about how rare that is!

This is a funny piece of art by a hilarious and clever writer. Get a copy and see for yourself!
