THE HIDING PLACE

by Karen Bohmfalk, Katy Skogberg van der Merwe,

and Cimmiaron Alvarez

Adapted from Corrie ten Boom’s autobiography, The Hiding Place dramatizes one family’s efforts to do what is right during Hitler’s invasion of Holland. Spinsters Cornelia and Betsie ten Boom and their elderly father become central figures in an underground operation to rescue, house and relocate persecuted Jews. But when Nazis raid their home, they find only the family, their “guests” safely hidden. The three are brutally arrested, separated, and imprisoned. Corrie and Betsie are shipped by crowded cattle car to a German prison camp, arriving with nothing but a tiny bottle of vitamins and a contraband Bible. In unbearable conditions, they share scripture and hope with others. In a powerful moment, Corrie discovers that the seeds of faith she and Betsie sowed have begun to grow in the most unlikely of hearts.

About the Playwrights

Karen Bohmfalk loves gritty stories featuring strong women who stand up for their beliefs, no matter the circumstances. Prior to retiring from a long teaching career (the last 21 years in Paradise, TX), Karen taught English and theater, among other subjects, coached UIL, and directed, adapted and wrote scripts for one-act play both independently and in collaboration with student writers. She grew up in Charlotte, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University. These days she lives in Benbrook, Texas, and some of her favorite people call her Ma.

Katy van der Merwe (Skogberg) was raised in a small community in North Texas. She holds a degree in Child Development and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, providing Play Therapy services to underserved populations. She is an avid world traveler, a mother, and a wife to her husband, Christiaan. Katy believes in the power of a person’s story. She especially enjoys partnering with others to overcome challenges using personal strengths and faith. In her spare time she enjoys playing guitar, hanging out with friends and family, and running.
