BROKEN THREAD
by D-Davis

On the day of a family portrait, sisters gather around a black baby grand piano: the altar where their immigrant mother has staked the family’s worth on beauty, discipline, and perfection. But the frame won’t hold. As the camera flashes, memory floods: a prodigy’s gift curdled by a predatory teacher, a needle traded for a lost note, another daughter screaming inside a pink dress no one heard. Broken Thread moves like music — a counterpoint of past and present –– braiding a family of women who learned to perform love before they could speak it. Working from the body and the fault lines, it stages what portraits conceal and what sisterhood, finally, dares to reveal — asking: when the thread breaks, can a family find the note again?
