SARAJEVO VOICES: A LOVE SONG

by Karen Bohmfalk and Austin R. Medlin

Set in war-torn Sarajevo in 1993, Sarajevo Voices follows the tragic story of two young lovers separated by culture and war, weaving lines from Romeo and Juliet throughout. Underpinning this story is the hope and perseverance of people who will go on, no matter what. The play, written for Texas UIL, allows for flexible and expanded casting, creative staging, and a great deal of directorial discretion.

About the Playwrights

Karen Bohmfalk loves gritty stories featuring strong women who stand up for their beliefs, no matter the circumstances. Prior to retiring from a long teaching career (the last 21 years in Paradise, TX), Karen taught English and theater, among other subjects, coached UIL, and directed, adapted and wrote scripts for one-act play both independently and in collaboration with student writers. She grew up in Charlotte, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University. These days she lives in Benbrook, Texas, and some of her favorite people call her Ma.

Austin Medlin is a Health Behavior doctoral student at Indiana University studying psychosocial factors’ influence on cardiovascular disease risk. Some of his academic work can be seen in British Journal of Health PsychologyPEC Innovation, and Healthcare. In theatrical performances, he especially values works drawing from history and real-life accounts to tell powerful, previously untold stories. Austin enjoys spending his free time hiking, playing board games, hoarding books, and spending time with his dog, Henry.
